Wow – Weta Productions, Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit

The second day in Wellington was all good with Nicki and Susan again. We had a full day touring the beaches, and saw funny penguin signs.

Penguins are in the wild all over NZ!

Have you ever seen one of these in your country?

Wellington is the place that Peter Jackson calls home, both for his house and his big film studio, WETA. If you are Lord of the Ring and The Hobbit fans, New Zealand is the place for you!

We drove through Hobbitown on our way to Rotarua, where they did some filming for the movies. And in Wellington, we visited a studio with actual props, costumes, and models.

There was a scary documentary that described WETA’s history that will give you nightmares for the rest of your lives – I would say that nobody should watch who is under 12 years old. I had my eyes closed most of the time. Check out some of the cool photos.

That evening, we went to a great Japanese restaurant with Nicki and Susan. I had yummy udon noodles with chicken.

Like I said before, just like San Francisico, Wellington is a very diverse, international city, and is the capital of New Zealand. Special thanks to Nicki and Susan for hosting my family there! We had a great time!

  1. Love your pictures and info about NZ! It looks like a wonderful place–although it seems to rain a LOT! Did you just hit gloomy weather or is it the rainy season there right now? Let us know…and have fun and stay dry in the meantime 🙂

    • Hi Tim,
I’m glad you love the pictures and info about NZ. It is Fall in New Zealand, that is why there is rain. Actually, we have been really lucky with weather. We just spent four days in Melbourne without a drop of rain. Look for another post soon.

  2. Hey Makenna,
Kelley and I are really enjoying your website reports! You are a wonderful travel journalist. And if you’re taking those photos, you’re a talented photographer as well. We’d like to visit NZ for a bike trip someday, so if you learn anything helpful for us about that, we’d love to hear about it. Looking forward to more reports, xo to you and your moms, Cindy and Kelley

    • Hi Cindy,
There is an amazing bike route on the Main Island of New Zealand. It’s called Alps to Ocean 200k. We saw some riders doing that route while we were driving from Omaru to Queenstown. My Moms really want to come back to ride the route too. Thanks for following my blog. Hope to hear from you again.

  3. Oh man, you have no idea how jealous I am you got to enjoy that Lord of the Rings museum. My brothers and I absolutely love those movies. That trilogy is an absolute masterpiece for this generation. Hope you guys are having a blast, blog is awesome! Especially awesome you stayed where filmed the whole thing, in New Zealand, where they managed to capture and film in all those uniquely different environments. Love you guys, keep having fun!
